Friday, January 8th, 2010

No Italian Food Drive ThroughWhen you look in someone’s car and see the coffee cups on the floor and empty bags from fast food restaurants, you can be fairly certain that the car is from someone who lives in the United States. In the United States we are accustomed to eating our meals quickly, regardless as to whether we are eating alone or with our friends and family. This is not the way that it is in Italy though. In Italy eating is an event where everyone takes time to enjoy one another’s company. This means that there is no rush to eat. Instead, the food is enjoyed just as much as the company is. Usually these long meals are reserved for special occasions while the daily meal only consists of two courses. This is because these special meals can last between three and four hours since there are so many courses. This is the reason that you will find drive through restaurants for most kinds of food, but not Italian food. Besides, it is hard to eat most Italian food while driving and still stay clean!

The sauce is traditionally a tomato sauce. A combination of smoked ham and creamed sauce is another variation to the traditional tomato sauce version of lasagna. It is not traditional, but many people make chicken lasagna and use a white sauce, like Alfred sauce. Some cooks will also add a layer of spinach to their lasagna.
