In the United States we are accustomed to eating our meals quickly, regardless as to whether we are eating alone or with our friends and family. This is not the way that it is in Italy though. In Italy eating is an event where everyone takes time to enjoy one another’s company. This means that there is no rush to eat. Instead, the food is enjoyed just as much as the company is. Usually these long meals are reserved for special occasions while the daily meal only consists of two courses. This is because these special meals can last between three and four hours since there are so many courses. This is the reason that you will find drive through restaurants for most kinds of food, but not Italian food. Besides, it is hard to eat most Italian food while driving and still stay clean!

Colorful LasagnaLasagna is a dish that dates back to Biblical times. Today this pasta and cheese dish is found throughout Italy and made in the US. Some people actually believe that Italian housewives who wanted to use leftover pasta and sauce invented this dish. Regardless of who may have created it, this is one of Italy’s many favorite versatile recipes. It can be made with ground beef, pork, ground Italian sausage, or a combination of any of them. The sauce is traditionally a tomato sauce. A combination of smoked ham and creamed sauce is another variation to the traditional tomato sauce version of lasagna. It is not traditional, but many people make chicken lasagna and use a white sauce, like Alfred sauce. Some cooks will also add a layer of spinach to their lasagna.
