Party Planning and Catering

Party Planning and Catering You have the date set, the RSVP’s are coming in, and you’ve got your sister lined up to help with decorations. It would seem like everything is set to go. As you start to look into the food, you have second thoughts about doing the food yourself even with your best friend helping you out. You are beginning to wonder if maybe you should look into catering the party after all.

Reasons that people choose to have a caterer:

  • Food safety-food must be stored and kept an certain temperatures to prevent the food from spoiling and getting guests sick. Food can look, smell, and taste fine but still have bacteria growing that can cause food poisoning.
  • Storage-the ingredients used to prepare the food and the finished dishes, once the food is prepared, will all need to be stored properly. Cold food will need to be refrigerated or on ice and hot food will need to be kept hot. Many homes are not equipped to do that. Even if there is room to store the food once it is made, there are other things needed for the party that will also need to be stored like drinks, ice, condiments, etc.
  • Equipment-food that needs to be kept hot will need a source of heat at the serving table not only for food safety but also so that last person in line gets hot food like the first person in line did. Tables, chairs, serving tables, coffee pots etc will all need to be borrowed or rented for a party.
  • Plates and utensils-most hosts and hostesses don’t have enough settings for everyone, depending on the size of the party. Paper and plastic settings will need to be purchased or “real” plates and utensils will need to be rented. There should always be extra for those who have second, dropped plates, and if extra guests come.
  • Set up and clean up-if the host or hostess isn’t going to be able to, then they will be asking guests for assistance or looking for someone to hire and hope they do a good job and know what they are doing. Setting up and clean up can prevent the host and hostess from enjoying their party and their guests.
  • Cost-though the cost of the ingredients to prepare the food will be less than buying it from the caterer, there is the time involved to prepare the food and the cost of the equipment needed to cook large amounts of food.
  • Replenishing-when the main dish or sides get low or the ice runs out or the fire goes out under the pans, someone will need to be there to replenish and relight. If the host and hostess is not on top of it, food can go bad and guests can go without food or drink.

Once you start looking into the details of serving food at your party, you may choose not to do it yourself by the time you add the costs up and realize how much time is involved. This would be a good time to look into catering. If you decide to have the party catered you can start by calling local restaurants to see about your catering options. If you are in the Miami, Florida area, you can have Mama Jennie’s Italian Restaurant cater your celebration, event, or other activity. There are many Italian dishes to choose from and different catering services to choose from.
