No Italian Food Drive Through

No Italian Food Drive ThroughWhen you look in someone’s car and see the coffee cups on the floor and empty bags from fast food restaurants, you can be fairly certain that the car is from someone who lives in the United States. In the United States we are accustomed to eating our meals quickly, regardless as to whether we are eating alone or with our friends and family. This is not the way that it is in Italy though.  In Italy eating is an event where everyone takes time to enjoy one another’s company.  This means that there is no rush to eat.  Instead, the food is enjoyed just as much as the company is.  Usually these long meals are reserved for special occasions while the daily meal only consists of two courses.  This is because these special meals can last between three and four hours since there are so many courses. This is the reason that you will find drive through restaurants for most kinds of food, but not Italian food. Besides, it is hard to eat most Italian food while driving and still stay clean!

Each course and each part of an Italian meal has a name. Though not every meal is going to include every course and part, most will be incorporated in most meals, especially for large gatherings.

Apertivo or Apertif

A drink, commonly alcoholic, that is enjoyed before you starting of the large meal, is called an Apertivo or Apertif.  Some of the most popular items that are enjoyed here include Aperol, Campari, Cinzazzno, Prosecco, Spritz and Vermouth.

Antipasto

You will then enjoy the Antipasto, which means “before the meal.”  This usually consists of both hot and cold appetizers and often includes olives, cheeses, meats, etc.

Primo: The First Course

Though in America, an Italian pasta meal will be served as the main course, traditionally it is the first course of an Italian meal. This course will consist of a hot dish such as gnocchi, pasta, polenta, risotto, or soup.

Secondo: The Second Course

This is actually the main dish, which consists of either fish or meat.  Some of the most commonly enjoyed meats are chicken, pork, and veal.  This is especially true in the northern region.  Recently, beef has also started to become a lot more popular.  In Tuscany, wild game is also growing in popularity.

Contorno

The Contorno is usually served along with the Secondo, as it is simply a side dish.  Usually this is a salad or some cooked vegetables.

Formaggio e Fruitas

The first dessert is called the Formaggio e Fruitas, which consists of cheese and fruit. Italians really love cheese, especially their local cheeses, are a very important part of this meal. It is different than what Americans would consider dessert.

Dolce

The second dessert is more what Americans commonly think of whenever they think about dessert after a meal.  These are sweet items and baked goods like cakes, cookies, and puddings.

Caffe

This is when the famous, delicious Italian coffee is served.  Italians do things different from Americans in that they enjoy their coffee after they have eaten their dessert instead of enjoying it with their dessert.

Digestives

The last part of an Italian meal is the liqueurs, also known as the digestives.  Some of the most popular Italian liqueurs include Amaro, Grappa, Limoncello, and Sambuca.  Sometimes these liqueurs are actually added to their coffee.
