To add a little Italian romance to your wedding you can incorporate a few Italian wedding traditions or you can go all out and with an elaborate Italian themed wedding. It is up to you. Find out as much as you can about Italian weddings on line or by talking with Italians and choose what you want to incorporate in your wedding. One of the easiest ways to add a little bit of Italy to you wedding is to add a few Italian traditions. One of the traditions is the “bomboniera” which means gift or favor. It is similar to the party favor, which is traditionally set at guests’ place settings in American weddings.

Throughout Europe there is the tradition of the “bomboniera”. This is actually a long-standing Italian wedding tradition in which a small gift is given to each person or family in attendance at the wedding. You will see this tradition at baptisms and anniversaries when Italian family and friends gather to celebrate the event.

Though confetti is commonly used to refer to the small pieces of paper that is released during public events or thrown at celebrations, it has a different meaning when it comes to the bomboniera. The small treats that are part of the bomboniera are called confetti. Since the Middle Ages, sugared almonds have been used as confetti and were given as a part of the bomboniera. This is given to each person or family, along with a special gift in appreciation for their support and good wishes. After the Italian wedding is over, bombonieras with confetti are also sent to people who couldn’t attend the event but did send a card or gift.

Italians considered uneven or odd numbers to be lucky. For this reason, there are five confetti pieces included within the bomboniera. Each of them stands for the following:

• Fertility
• Happiness
• Health
• Longevity
• Wealth

If you want to, you can use more than five pieces of confetti, but to be in line with an Italian theme, it must always be an uneven number of pieces that is used. The choices here usually consist of almonds, chocolates, or chocolate covered almonds.

The real, traditional bomboniere that are made in Italy are made with the following:

• Silk
• Organza
• Tulle
• Ribbons
• Flowers

Once these are bought or made, they can then be filled with your choice of confetti. In Italy, a beautiful bigliettino (Italian favor tag) is then attached to the bomboniera once the bomboniera is filled. An imprinted favor ribbon can also be used. The ribbon traditionally has the date of the wedding as well as the names of bride and groom. The women of the family and girlfriends often assemble these for the wedding reception.

Many Italians will also create a special, more significant bomboniera for their close family members as well as to any of their friends who have played a special role within their celebration. Some families will give the following bomboniera

• Crystal figurines
• Porcelain flowers
• Silver bowels

Over the years, many Italian families have continued the tradition of the bomboniera even if their wedding doesn’t take place in Italy, because the bomboniere makes their guests feel both honored and important. However, what is more important is that the bomboniera will always remind guests of the wedding.
