Italian Bread is Not the EnemyBread is a very simple food that is a basic in almost every diet.  For those who are trying to loose weight, bread consumption is usually restricted. Most of the mass produced bread is bread is full of additives and preservative with little nutritional value.  This isn’t true of Italian bread that you purchase from the bakery or that is homemade. Italian breads are usually nutritious hearty breads that are made from fresh ingredients and whole grains.

Italian bread is actually one of the tastiest types of bread that there is.  In addition to a healthy Italian bread, there are other types of bread that you can buy or make that originated in Italy.  For instance, Focaccia is quite popular in Italy and it is now becoming quite popular around the rest of the world too.  Focaccia bread is a type of Italian bread that is baked flat in an oven.  Traditionally it was baked in the fire’s hearth, which is how it got its name.  Sometimes it is topped with onions and a variety of other herbs.  This Italian bread is usually seasoned with olive oil and topped with cheese.  Outside of Italy it is primarily used as bread for sandwiches.  Another great bread that Italy is known for the crust for pizza.  This is traditionally delicious, crisp bread topped with sauce, cheese, and various meat and vegetable toppings.

Italian bread can be served with the first or second course of an Italian meal. In the United States, a loaf of Italian bread is split or sliced and brushed with olive oil or butter, sprinkled with garlic, and broiled until browned to be served with and Italian pasta dish. Some sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese or grated Parmesan cheese and parsley on top of the bread before broiling. It may be grilled also.

Over the past couple of years bread has received some bad press.  This has cause a lot of people to see eating bread almost like a deadly sin.  However, if you choose the right bread and don’t eat too much of it, it can be enjoyed without doing severe damage to a diet.  So, what is the “right bread?”  It is one that is made with whole grain flour, yeast, eggs, water, sugar, and salt.   The point is that good, fresh, wholesome bread is healthier than processed bread.  In fact, it is actually a lot healthier than some of the other things that you could eat, that may be included in a diet.

While homemade bread isn’t very common, it is actually quite simple to make bread.  Making bread can be a lot more enjoyable than simply buying it in the supermarket.  Kneading the bread can be done by anyone in the family, no matter what the age.

Whenever bread is made with good, basic ingredients, it can be quite nutritious.  Whole grain bread is actually a complex carbohydrate that helps to slowly release energy and maintain healthy blood sugar levels.  Eating bread really is a simple pleasure and this is something that is truly understood in Italy.  In fact, there isn’t any table that doesn’t have bread on it at mealtime.  This is because it is believed that bread that is drizzled with extra virgin olive oil is one of life’s greatest simple foods.

Regardless of what type of Italian bread you like, whenever it is made properly you will find yourself falling in love with it all over again.  It really is that delicious.
