It’s hard to imagine life without chocolate if you are a chocolate lover. With so many types of chocolates available in so many ways from bars with nuts and caramel to sauces, it is hard to think of chocolate in its simple form. There was a time when chocolate was not known to Italy. Chocolate found its way to Italy in the sixteenth century when Spanish importers brought it back with them from Mexico. At this time it was served as a hot drink to only the wealthy and the privileged. Then in the eighteenth century a new world of chocolate flavor combinations opened up and became available.
1940’s
In 1946 Pietro Ferrero decided that he was going to make his future from chocolate. He lived in the Northwestern Piemonte region of Italy, and along with his brother, he chose to open a chocolate laboratory in Alba. The first chocolate delicacy that they developed was Pasta Gianduja. Even though chocolate was considered to be somewhat of a delicacy at that time, this mixture of chocolate and hazelnut was something that people found highly enjoyable and were willing to purchase it. In a short period of time it became well known throughout the world as Nutella.
1950’s
By the early 1950’s Pietro Ferrero’s son, Michelle, took over running the chocolate manufacturing facility. By then, Nutella had become popular and accepted throughout the world, to the point that it actually outsells peanut butter, Ferrero decided to introduce two new products: Kinder Chocolates and Tic-Tac mints. Within 20 years these products had also become quite popular throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
1960’s – 1970’s
Ferrero’s chocolate candy maintains its popularity throughout Europe. They are also producing Mon Cheri and Pocket Coffee products that are expected to win worldwide demand soon as well. Ferrero’s is just one of the many famous chocolate producers in Italy. The following will satisfy your appetite for chocolate
• Gelato (Italian ice cream)
• Alpino (liquor filled chocolate)
• Baci (a combination of hazelnut and chocolate)
• Rota Sabauda (very rich chocolate frosted cake)
• A variety of chef’s creations (chocolate sauce over roast venison)
In fact, you will find your senses amazed and delighted whenever you visit candy shops, chocolate factories, and family owned sweet shops throughout this country. So, the next time you visit Italy make sure that you purchase a “ChocoPass” from the local tourist office so that you can enjoy a huge sampling of chocolate delicacies from a variety of locations. Many of these events are held in wineries, shops, and restaurants.

Today there is also a yearly celebration in Turin, Italy where this “food of the gods” is showcased. Visitors are able to enjoy all types of chocolate in the Piazza Vittorio Veneto. One thing that most visitors enjoy is the local hot chocolate, which is thick enough to stand your spoon up in. This is quite different from any of the flavored milks that you may have tried in the United States. Another regional favorite of Piemonte, which was enjoyed is still currently enjoyed, is a mixture of hazelnut paste and chocolate.
Italian chocolates make a great desert after a delicious Italian meal. You can create your own Italian dishes at home or go to an Italian restaurant like Mama Jennie’s in Miami, Florida and Davies, Florida and choose from a number of authentic Italian dishes from their menu.
